More terminology

Regardless, the device on the fender is a relay not a solenoid.
The Ford shop manuals think it's a solenoid and so do parts stores. By function it's basically a heavy duty relay. Ford also called the vacuum actuated enrichment device in carburetors an "economizer valve" where Holley calls it a power valve, the emissions air pump is a "thermactor", the magnetic pickup in a distributor is a stator. If you invent something you get to name it.

They can call it a solenoid, but that's literally not what the device is or does.

K. Point State Park. 19:00 today.

I'll be in the bear suit.

I bet you will...

Pretty similar, they both move something. One moves a contact plate and the other moves something else (like a starter drive, hydraulic valve etc)

To add to the fun a lot of starter solenoids resemble starter relays to confuse laymen.

Yes, technically a solenoid is ANY coil of wire used to create a uniform magnetic field within that coil's space
And under that basic definition an ignition coil(for spark) could be called a solenoid, but it isn't called a solenoid

As with all things function changes its name
We have stairs inside the house but steps outside??? WTF.........LOL

So if this magnetic field is generated to move something, like washing machine's water valves or starter motor gear its called a Solenoid
If magnetic field is generated to make an electrical connection its a Relay
If magnetic field is generated to make a spark its an ignition coil

On some starter motors there is a combo unit, a solenoid/relay, because it does BOTH functions, moves starter gear out and connects battery positive cable to the starter motor's brushes

If its in a fuse box or on the inner fender its a relay, but inner fender unit was called a solenoid for years PRIOR TO relays being used in vehicles
But Relays are used now, so welcome to the PRESENT :)

Fords thingamajigger part number

Ford 7L1Z-4635-A KIT - Universal

Fits or replaces everything..................it's Universal

Now that this is settled...

Whats the difference between a motor and an engine?

Or maybe the difference between a transmission and a tranny?

A "motor" generally means it needs an outside power source, like electricity or Vacuum to operate

"Engines" are usually self powered

But I think most people use them interchangeably as far as gasoline or diesel powered are concerned
Most don't say "electric engine" when meaning electric motor, but do call a boat engine an outboard motor :)

Steps and stairs, man, steps and stairs, lol

He said it so much better than I was going to...

aaannnddd...

Bendix is/was a company that made starter drives (among other things).
