Hello all
I’m trying to change a timing belt on my ‘97 ranger with the 2.3.
I’m having trouble getting the bolt out. My impact won’t move it
Anyone have any imput?

brace a breaker bar against the top of the drivers side frame rail or the bottom of the passenger side frame rail then bump the starter, it'll come out...

Pull the fuel pump relay first for the love of god.

I've been adventurous... trying to spare people other similar adventures.

Good call, pedal to the floor for clear flood mode should stop it from running as well.

Belt was broke so I diddnt bother with the relay. The breaker bar trick worked! Thanks!
Now the belt is on but I can’t get all 3 timing marks lined up at the same time with the belt on. Do they need to be perfect?

Yes, if I remember correctly you need to start it a tooth off before releasing the tensioner because the tensioner moves it a tooth. Someone make that into a coherent sentence I'm tired...

Allow me to translate from Dirt-enese to English...
Yes, the timing marks must line up. Sometimes you have to line one or more of the marks up a little shy of dead on and allow the tensioner to pull the marks into place. You may have to try it a few times to get it dead on, if it’s your first time doing a timing belt.

Yes this is my first time. I’ve tried it several times but one or the other is off a bit. I’ll keep trying until i get it right. Thanks

It’s been a long time since I did a timing belt on an old 2.3l...
IIRC, there is a triangle and a diamond on the pulleys. Make sure your trying to line the correct symbol up. (That may only be on the older ones)
