Engine Cover

My favorite engine cover was originally designed by GMC. I'm at work so I don't have time to dig up a picture, but it's know as an 8-71.

Yeah those 8-71's cost a little more than a plastic cover lol. Well worth every penny though.

The XL or XLT doesn't have the piece of plastic over the engine. I guess that is a higher trim level/Lariat thing.

Just a FYI thing.

Question: On the intake elbow on the Lariat, it looks like a resonator is attached. While the XL/XLT just has a pipe.

Was the the resonator removed on the lower trim? Or Does Ford only care about intake rumble in the Lariaits?

I have the fancy color one from an Expedition on my tool box because I'm too lazy to get it on and off every time I need to do something.

I think I have had it off twice, only a couple screws hold it on.

It is a little unflattering to open a hood of a vehicle with a turbo & all you see is a wiring harness and no turbo.

I would be thrilled to open the hood and gaze upon the spark plugs all in a neat row down the middle with absolutely nothing in the way of changing them.

Turbos are usually on the side of automotive engines so generally you can't see them in a OEM application anyway.

Maybe, only Ford Customers who buy the upper trim care about intake rumble, and Ford knows that.(hint of sarcasm)

The engine cover is I think to quiet the engine noise. I am getting a XL and will get a cover to put on for that reason. I have heard that ford somehow is piping a little noise into the cab for marketing reasons. Anyone know how to disable that stupid idea?

If you look at the two pics in the first post there is a big box coming off the intake tube of the truck with the engine cover, it is tied into that. I don't know if they are doing on lower trim trucks (maybe fancy XLT's )

The cover isn't very big, I don't know how much noise it would really absorb.

Do a before and after test and let us know

The engine cover is a foam like material instead of the normal hard plastic you see, I guess thats what helps dampen the sound. Why they wouldnt put it across all models is anyone's guess, cheesy way to save a couple bucks.

Yes, there is some form of artificial "intake noise" piped in, I believe through the sound system. I totally agree that this is a pretty stupid idea, but it is not at all bothersome to me. For some reason this seems to be done by many manufactures

It's done to keep idiotic noise complaints down. When the engine is "too quiet" other road noise and typical interior creeks and rattles become more noticeable. The engine acts as a white noise machine to cover those noises up. Instead of paying a fortune to sound proof and pad every panel, nut, and fastener they add an artificial engine sound to work as the white noise machine so they dont get swamped by dumb customers bitching about every rattle.

Its a huge problem on EV's.

They pipe in intake noise which kinda sounds like exhaust noise but without the unpleasant fumes.

The engine with the cover looks like it has the ductwork for piping intake noise into the cab.

I don't need to see the turbo unless I am working on it. I trust that it is there.

In my career I have spent far more time working on wiring than turbos. I don't always trust they are there like the book says they are.

When fastpakr and I were at the Michigan Assembly Plant back in October, we noticed that some engines had covers on them, and some didn't. They had the trucks on display, and some had the hoods up. I just assumed that they had removed the covers on some so people could see what was under them.

That is what I thought at the time too, struck me as kind of weird since there really isn't really much to see.

I believe on the Ranger it is all electronic, not a "sound tube like some others have.

I do see what you mean though, Im wondering if this is preproduction as mine does not have whatever that plumbing is off the intake tube in the pic. Mine looks more like the XLT.
