2019 Ford Ranger: Unconfirmed Reader Image Shows over 21 MPG Highway Average

The new 2019 Ford Ranger is supposed to go on sale in early 2019, and we are getting very close to knowing everything about it. One of the crucial specs we do not yet know is the fuel economy estimate and rating. Will the Ranger be able to match or beat midsize truck class leading mpg?

The truck only has one engine and transmission combination. It’s a 2.3L turbocharged four-cylinder with a rating of 270 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque, and it’s mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission.

We recently received this image of a 2019 Ford Ranger Lariat prototype from an anonymous source. The average fuel economy reads: 21.2 MPG, and the source claims that this Ranger prototype was driven approximately 2,100 miles from Michigan to Seatle, Washington for an event, and the 21.2 MPG is the average from the trip. We cannot currently confirm this results from a secondary source, but averaging over 21 MPG in an optioned midsize truck is not a bad result.

Ford or the EPA have not yet announced fuel economy numbers for the U.S. Ford Ranger, but here is what the Ranger has to contend with:

Toyota Tacoma 4WD gas V6 – 20 MPG combined
Chevy Colorado 4WD gas V6 – 19 MPG combined
Nissan Frontier 4WD gas V6 – 18 MPG combined

Take a look at the 2019 Ford Explorer AWD fuel economy EPA rating. It’s 18 MPG city, 25 MPG highway, and 21 MPG combined. The Explorer is using a similar 2.3L turbocharged I4 engine, but it’s mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission.

Perhaps, the 2019 Ford Ranger 4×4 will have a rating close to the 18/25/21 MPG of the Explorer AWD, but we will have to wait and see.

Seems reasonable. I average about 18.5 with the 4.0 SOHC in my 2011. Averaged about 21 with the 2.5 Lima in my 1998.

After all, the Ranger is still a truck and isn’t gonna get car mpg. And I’ve never (but almost did once or twice) got the mpg Ford said the truck was supposed to on straight highway driving (23 mpg).

With MPG numbers like that, I'll stick to my Escape. When I need to pick up something that wont fit in it, I just hook up my trailer.

I wouldn't put a lot of credit in that MPG number. It's a new truck. People are probably driving it hard which is effecting MPG. My Expedition gets good gas mileage, but not the way I drive it.

My v6 08 Sport Trac averaged 19 city and Tallahassee has a lot of hills. These numbers ain't that bad really.

My 157" F150 with 3.5TT can get 21 mpg so I am not impressed with that number.

On a recent road trip to MS from IA (about 1000 miles) plus a day of bopping around Hattiesburg, I got 18 mpg with my 2013 Ram Crew Cab 4x4 5.7 Hemi......if 21 mpg is the avg, I, for one, am not impressed at all.....pretty pathetic for a 4-banger. Highway needs to be at least 27+, especially with a 10-speed tranny. They should really start getting their highway MPG at 65 mph, since most highways are 65 and interstates are 70-80 mph for a more realistic average.

F-150 Ecoboosts can't run E85.

My F-150 doesn't care (17mpg @ 70mph on straight or E10) but it has a lot less going on than a more modern engine.

I90 in South Dakota has an 80mph speed limit, I couldn't afford to feed anything in my fleet at that speed. My Ranger only would be 5mph from pegging the speedometer.

Switching from straight gas at 75mph to E10 premium at 85mph is a significant hit to my brother's '11 Mustang GT. Like 27mpg to 22mpg.

And that is all open country running, only city driving is getting to a gas station.

Unless the vehicle is rated for E85, I wouldn’t run it. Those are generally, the flex fuel labeled vehicles. Ethanol is corrosive, so the fuel system needs to have stainless steel lines and seals that are resistant to ethanol.

I don’t think any of the ecoboost engines are rated for that.
