Hey guys, ran across a junker 97 Explorer today. 4.0 SOHC, 4wd automatic. I'm rebuilding my old 96 Ranger ext cab 4wd. Is this Explorer worth a few bucks? It has 4 wheel discs, SOHC engine, as I said its a junker. will crank and move, but not really driveable.

Thanks,

Fnsane

Can swap the rear with a few modifications.
Engine can be used.
Not sure on the trans.
Transfer case should be swapable.
Seats are swapable.

Front suspension won’t work both are different.

I wouldn’t pay more than 250, if it’s unreliable.

I picked up a 94 explore a few months ago and I’m gonna be using a lot off it. Paid $500 for it, main reason I grabbed it was the dash was in the same color style and in excellent shape.

basicly look at your ranger than look at the explorer. Think about what’s usable off the explorer and the cost of those parts you can use.
Rear axles usually go for $200.
Junkyard engines can vary from local yards $200-$400 or more if they pull it.

Thanks, I was mostly looking at engine and disc brake/axle swap. My 96 is 5 speed 4.0. I'd think I could get more ponies out of the SOHC. Anyway, Explorer is crappo but got some good stuff on it. Think I'll offer your 250 and haul off.

Youll need to use the Expo trans behind the SOHC. The OHV bell pattern is slightly different

adapter?

Na, I'm gonna stay with manual. Exploder has auto. Does someone make adapter plate??

I don't think the ohv & sohc have different boltups, look it up, it's on the main site here at TRS.

I can't imagine why someone would want sohc and an automatic transmission or do you just want trouble lol

From another forum:
"The OHV and the SOHC have the SAME bolt pattern.

All bolts will line up. Nothing was changed on the 5R transmission that was behind the OHV vs. SOHC."

The bolt patterns are slightly different. The SOHC engine has a single extra bolt, so close enough that it works.

Again you 100% CAN bolt the SOHC engine to your OHV trans.
