2019 Ranger Powertrain

Is there a truck anywhere nowadays with a manual you can buy new ?

Tacoma TRD and Cummins Ram. Few dealers stock them so they are basically special order.

There might be a configuration of Colorado that offers it too, never checked into them too much.

But they are out there.

Road & Track did an interesting article on the Ranger 2.3L engine including photos of the engine that was on display at the NAIAS. Looks like the block actually has more in common with the Focus RS than the Mustang EB. It uses the same coolant transfer passage between adjacent cylinders as the Focus block which is different than the Mustang block. It is also an "open deck" design, same as both the Focus and Mustang.

I'm surprised they are going with a belt drive fan. Figured they would have went electric for less drag more economy.

99% sure4 it is same 2.3 eco as in the new Explorer.
Explorer Sport gets the 3.5 TT, BTW.

Interesting, thought belt driven fans went the way of the dinosaur, oh how I long for that clutch fan noisy roar lol.
like to hear from engineer why they are using that 'technology'.

I agree. Makes no sense to use belt driven instead of electric fans on a new vehicle with so much tech.

Have also heard that Ford is installing a special line at their Cleveland engine plant just for the Ranger 2.3L. If that is true along with all the changes pointed out in the R&T article it sounds like the Ranger engine will be unique to that vehicle.

I think the writer was just blowing smoke making his article longer.

I see no reason why they would go to a belt driven fan, I don't think there has been any underhood photos released yet so we have no reason why the water pump and timing cover was changed.

Aside from them taking a FWD car engine and putting in a RWD truck... that may need more cooling capacity and thus a different water pump.

We don't know the whole story yet, and I don't think the writer does either.

FWIW Ford typically mounted fan clutches with a big reverse thread stud, not four bolts... so take that into consideration too.

EDIT:

This made so little sense I went back thru my pics from when we were up there... holy crap. I got nuthin. It doesn't look threaded in their pics but in the pics I personally took there is no doubt it is threaded for a fan clutch.

EDIT #2: That ain't even the water pump like it would be on pretty much every other engine I have been around. :black_eye:

hopefully the Ranger doesn't inherit the head gasket issues that the Focus RS has

The good news is that they finally seem to be acknowledging and fixing that.

Interesting article from R&T, thx:

Electronic wastegate/larger turbo charger = more low end torque; I suspect more power potential too. Colorado's/Tacoma's engines with their 7k rpm power peaks make the 3.slow look like a low revving "truck" motor, so it isn't just max torque, it is usable torque too (although the 8+ speed autos do help with fact they have no power down low)

Belt driven fan - New F-150 diesel has one too, as do Ram diesels. Needed to prevent overheating, e.g. J2807 tow requirement - 100°F day up Davis Dam grade has caused vehicles with electric fans issues. I don't know why they can't just install larger electric fan, but belt driven seems to work better.

It will be interesting how much power they rate the stock motor for, while leaving some head room for a Wildtrak/Raptor edition.

Current RoW 3.2 diesel can't be used in NA Ranger as it is larger than the 3.0 going into the F-150 and marketing can't have that. RoW 2.2 diesel would get its @$$ handed to it by the competition's Duramax. Better not to pick that fight. New Ranger diesel isn't proven; team doesn't have enough resources to adequately test 2 completely new power trains and it would be embarrassing to have issues with an engine at roll out is my bet.

Taco only has a 6 speed.

Ecoboost should own the Tacoma, not sure about the Colorado. It might have enough with the right trans to give the 2.3 a good brawl.

While Ford has not acknowledged anything yet it seems fairly likely that the gasket supplier shipped the wrong head gaskets to the plant building the Focus RS engines. They probably shipped the head gasket for the Mustang 2.3 which will not seal properly on the Focus RS block. Blocks are similar but machined differently where the head gasket seals. Ford just issued a TSB on the Focus RS.

Same thing could theoretically happen on the Ranger 2.3 but hopefully they have learned their lesson.
