Help with tranny swap, what fits?

Hi there,
I have an 85 Ranger reg cab, short box 2.3L turbo diesel with manual trans (2wd). The trans lost 2nd gear and I am wondering what will swap. I hope I can find some more info here as I have already looked at the Tech section.

I have two choices:
1) use TK 5spd 2wd from my donor 86 supercab long box 2.9L??
2) buy a donor truck that I could use all the 4x4 gear from the clutch to the wheels and bolt on. (from what I can find, I would need the FM145 transmission???

I hope someone can help me with this please!

If your looking for a straight swap, the Toyo Koygo will be better off than the FM145, as it is able to withstand more Torque and demand. The Toyo Koygo is a pretty good transmission.

The FM145 is what i have in my ranger. And i have a 87 ranger 4x4 that originally had the old cranky 2.9 but swapped to a 4.0. FM145 is a good trans too, only problem i have ever ran into was when i rebuilt it, i had to get an update kit for 5th and Reverse because one of the teeth off the gears broke off to a manufacturer fault, the update kit fixes this. Only thing i have ever ran into with it. Hope this helps! Let me know what you choose! Good Luck!

m5od wasn't introduced till 1988 and only then in was behind the lima 4cyl (2.0l, 2.3l) gas engine for that year.
