'87 4x4, totally stock, 2.3L. What can I get away with for tires, if all I do is fender trim it?

I'm working on the cheap right now, and I think my biggest obstacle is the ground clearance. So I'm thinking of looking at used tires to throw on this thing, and its only purpose is to hit the trails, I don't drive it otherwise(except to get to/from the trail).

i had an 88 with the bushwhacker cutouts running 32x11.50 on it but they were not really all that agresive

how much do you want to trim?

33x12.50s should be possible with enough trimming.

Gotcha! Can the 2.3L engine, and stock axles handle that ok, if it is only used to/from the trail, and on the trails?

The 2.3 can with the right gears. The D28 front axle will be right at it's limit though, you may want to do the D35 swap and use at minimum 4.56 gears.

If an axle & gear swap are out of budget, then it may be better to stick with some 31s.

Biggest tire with JUST fender trimming?

Hello,

That's a nice looking ranger in your pic. Did you contend with any wires or any hidden obstructions under the fender or fender wall? Thanks.

i had an 88 that was running 33s with the 2.3l of furry and it did ok... if your just looking to run down dirt roads and stuff youll be fine... it will be slugish but i will still get the job done
