Why is there no fluid?

Just got a question, on the a4ld, where the output shaft joins the t-case, in the void in there, there was ATF fluid in there on the automatic but on the m5od there is no fluid in there, wondering why this is different or is something not right

the outpust shaft seal on ur m50d is good, there shouldnt be any fluid in there as the trans and t-case use different kinds of fluids

No, that's not correct.

All RBV transfer cases use ATF.

For unclear reasons, the M5OD has a clear cavity (with a drain!) between the transmission and transfer case. I believe the FM146 does as well. The FM145 and TK4/5s do not; there is gear lube right up against the front of the transfer case.
 
Basically most t-cases that have an oil pump inside them use ATF

T-cases that use gear oil are generally "splash" lubricated.

Yes, the M5OD has a seal, but those seals are prone to leaking

the real problem is that someone thoughtfully put a sipe groove
in the Trans-to-tcase gasket surface so that WHEN (not if) the
seal fails that the oil can actually escape all the way to the ground...

that is why I strongly recommend SEALING that groove with a blob of silicone

When the seal fails if the other escape is blocked worst case that chamber allows
less than a pint of fluid to escape into it and then the oil loss stops.

FM-146 also shits gear lube when the T-case is pulled...
 
its awfully funny there is that machined groove there, and a gasket. why have a gasket when you have a oil escape groove?

when i pulled the t-case off the a4ld that atf in the cavity just about landed on my face, missed me by an inch, i didnt seal the cavaity though when i put the m5 in, i am looking for a 1354 manual, i will seal it then hate that pos touchdrive
 
On my personal transmission that sipe groove has a drilled and tapped hole into which I threaded an aluminum bolt smeared with epoxy then cut it off flush with the gasket surface.

it WILL NOT leak.
