2002 Ford Ranger FX4 VW 2.0L TDI Build

If the speed sensor is in the transfer case output shaft wouldn't it still work with this set up? I plan to use the stock transfer case if possible.
Speed sensor in a 2002 Ranger reads the transmission output shaft, not t-case.

That will be an issue than. I guess I could go with the stock trans, I just don't like that it is rated for 240ft-lbs. I also like the NV-3550 gearing better.

I think I will still go with the NV-3550 and figure out the speedometer later. Worst case I could use a gps gauge unit.

Truck weights in at 4000lbs with under a quarter tank of gas. (I weigh about 160)

Filled the truck up and will see what MPG I get from everyday driving (city/highway mix)

Drove the truck a bit, got the RPM at 65 and 70mph (5th gear)

With my 250# dirt bike in the bed at 65/70 mph (5th gear) the truck did OK on hills, if I kept the throttle in the same spot the truck would slow down a lot, had to put my foot into it to keep it up to speed, probably should have been in 4th on some of the hills. Here are pictures of the truck and my 2002 4.0L Automatic (yellow) Ranger. My friend’s ATV (Banshee) in the back and he explained that that truck performed the same as mine.

Another question: Given the HPFP issues VW has, are you going to go with something like 2Micron solution to that problem since you'll obviously be 'out of warranty', just as a safeguard?

Chuck

an absolute 2 mic solution could be a mess. but if you keep filters it would be ok.

i run used filtered oils generally at 20-30 percent mix rate to keep my costs below regular unleaded and get the mpg bump. green says its a bad idea to run such blends through these, which is a big negative.

my tuck at its lowest weight is 5850 ish empty.

with normal road tools, full size spare and jack it is over 6 k. i assume you have a spare and ect normal tools inside? i rarely seen a steel wheeled truck under 4100 in ext cab 4x4. theres guys that say they weigh 3500.....:icon_confused:

4-5 k weight with good gearing the little dub diesel i think is fine if your not towing. getting into the 6 k with big tires like my fat bastard its past any return i would bet for economy.

the 3550 and a 241 or s10 case would be a good combo. adapting to the ford speedo should only take a call to a place like dakota digital....possibly just use the gm sensor and reset the psom with thier 8k device.

I think the '2Micron' option is the name of someone online (like over at www.tdiclub.com) that either solely, or, collaboratively, I don't know which, devised a filter mitigation to VW's 2.0L HPFP self-destructing. From my like one time reading of a post about it, it doesn't save the HPFP, what it does is save your engine and possible fuel lines from being contaminated with the destruction of said HPFP. It reduces a failed VW HPFP from the entire fuel system to much less than the entire fuel system.

Obviously those within VW warranty aren't going to be in VW warranty if they put such a setup on their in warranty ride. Here you don't have that problem, so was just mentioning it as going through all this and then at some point having the dreaded VW HPFP issue would suck to say the least.

Chuck I really appreciate the info and you mentioning it. I know of this issue but I did not know it was such a big issue that someone made a kit to help save the engine. It must happen more often than I realized. This is something I will have to keep in mind when I look at the engine I am planing on buying tomorrow, as well as after I install it. THANK YOU!

Wow, why is yours 5850 and mine is about 4000? My truck does have the spare tire and tools in it too. This site shows the truck curb weight at 3584lbs so I figured with fluids the 4000lbs I got was accurate.

I am hoping that with the ECU tuned to 184bhp/333lb-ft crank I will be able to haul or tow the rated capacity and still get good fuel mileage.

Dakota Digital seems like they have all the good stuff I need to use the stock gauges, I have not called them yet though.

My Dad ordered the NV-3550 yesterday from Smart Parts Automotive.

I found a 2010 TDI engine with turbo, wiring harness, ECU and some more about 2.5hrs away from me. We are going to check it out tomorrow morning. He says it only had 1500 miles on it when the car was wrecked and he just wanted it for building new motor mounts for a project of his. The pictures look great, hopefully it is as good as he says it is.

Well, I don't think it's happening to like 10% of VW 2.0L TDIs or some large number like that, however, if you are unlucky enough to get hit by it, your entire fuel system is trashed. You're talking about completely rinsing the fuel tank, completely flushing the lines, replacing the HPFP, replacing the injectors, and whatever else I don't remember. It's like a $5000-$8000 repair when VW does it - so while the frequency might be small, the impact is large.

I'd love to do a swap like you're doing, but if I did, I'd certainly make sure I read up on whatever the 2Micron mitigation is, and anything else out there, and install that when I was putting in the swap.

<- Not affiliated or compensated in any way for any VW 2.0L HPFP mitigation solutions.

I eagerly await to see how this turns out...

fluids in a ranger....5 gallons of operation lubes and cooling at 8 pounds to be safe....and 23 gallons at 7.7 for fuel....180 pound occupant.....320 pounds....so 3984....thats the weight i expect tank 1/2 empty without driver.

for the most part internet claims can go pound sand, i never in real life on a real scale seen one under 4 k....4x4 ext cab except some early trucks.

i have guys claiming cummins 4x4 250 ext cab 4x4 dodges that weigh 4500 pounds:icon_rofl:....because the internet says so.

my truck is not stock. that is why it is a fat bastard.

one ton axles, hd wheels and large tires, hd steering and suspension, winch, custom bed, v8 diesel, 4l80 and 208 f t case....and about 650 pounds more iron on the drawing board to add to all of that shit some day...

with a sbf 4200 was the min.

Been working on a different project (Yamaha Rhino open locking rear differential) so this one got put on hold for a bit. I did purchase the engine and it looks great, came with a lot of extra parts too. I need to send the ECU out to get it immobilized.

And we got the transmission in.

Engine and trans in the garage.

Ordered the bell housing yesterday so I can start mating the two!

Ah crap man, that's a bummer! Your truck is so close to mine I was really looking forward to seeing how your swap went!
