Penzoil and Quaker State are paraffin based oils. I do not use them for that reason.

I almost fall off my chair every time I read that. Do you know what a paraffin is? Hint: it's NOT a synonym for paraffin wax.

ALL mineral oils are paraffin based. So is gasoline (mostly), propane, methane, etc. A paraffin is a linear chain hydrocarbon with all single-bonds. That's all.

I'm thinking of switching from Mobil ! which I've always used to WalMarts house brand Synthetic witch is significantly less expensive and meets the same spec.

Changing ever 3,000 miles is excessive. Go 5k with conventional, even more with synthetic. I used to do it every 3k, but I'm slowly accepting the fact that 5k is ok. I'm currently changing it every 4k, trying to ease myself into it lol. Or every 6 months, whichever comes first. Synthetic can go a year though if you don't put too many miles on it. Oh yeah and I'm using Motorcraft 5w-30 synthetic blend, GREAT stuff. I switched all my vehicles over to it.

i knew i was opening a can of worms when i posted this thread. sorry everybody. everybody had their opinions tho and that all i wanted. thanks for everyones sofay i do appriciate them.

for me i can't push myself past letting it go 3k without changing the oil. i am a car guy, changing my oil dosen't bother me. its not like i'm driving enough to be changing it every 2 or 3 weeks. some people see all motor oils as equals. in my eyes they are all different. thats just my opinion

It is simple, while you are under warranty change the oil at or before the manufacturers recommendation. Class 4 synthetics like Mobil 1 (not Castrol Syntec) will give you more wear prevention,slightly more fuel efficiency and a bit more power. Why does Eaton Gear change a 300,k warranty for big rig rear diffs a boost to 1 million when you change to and keep using synthetic gear oil. Ford , Dodge and GM all use synthetic gear oils. If you are going to trade your truck in in 2-5 years just use good regular oil every 3- 5k , if you want more out of your truck use a good syn oil. Don't belive me? Ask what your local oil analysis place is using. Because they can test it for free they go 9 to 16 k miles between changes BUT they test every 5 thousand miles or so. For performance I got 1 more mpg out of my 20 year old Impala on the highway. Muscle Car Review put RedLine syn in the engine , manual trans and rear diff of a 1970 Charger and got 4 tenths of a second on the quarter mile.

I am the only one in my family that uses even a synthetic blend. My parents and brother all have vehicles well over a decade old and well over 100k (some even closing in on 200k) that still run perfectly and have seen nothing but conventional.

Change the oil when it needs changed, whatever you use that meets the Ford's basic requirements will be fine. The big advantage of synthetic is that it lasts longer, if you are bound and determined to change every 3k you would be throwing money away to use synthetic.

Synthetic differential oils have become popular in normal vehicles because it is one fluid that no one ever thinks to change until they have problems.

Magizines are terrible resources because they are sponsered by the companies they "test". They are not going to have a full page ad of a product and then have an article that says the same product doesn't do anything.

Extended service intervals are great for a part (differentials) that often neglected. I mentioned something that effect in my last post.

Synthetics last longer, that is a given. But if you change your engine oil at 3-4k there is little advantage to using it.

Testing has actually shown the most wear after an oil change occurs in the first 3000 miles, 5k is fine. I haven't changed my Mobil 1 since November 06, since I add a quart every 3-4 weeks, still 60 PSI of oil pressure.

I always run valvoline 10w-30 conventional and change it every 5k

Just out of curiosity why would most of the wear occure in the first 3k miles with fresh oil?

i usually run motorcraft for 25k miles(alows engine to break in), then i switch to full synthetics, (mobil 1) and i change it at 5,000 miles
