I have open front and rear differentials. Rear 8.8 3.73 28 spline. If I wanted to upgrade to say, a Traction Lock L/S from a Mustang that I could get on eBay for $150 or so, is it just a matter of removing the spider gears and bolting the l/s to the ring gear? Surely there's more to it. I'm just ign'ant.
 
Nope, you got it. But the gears will have to be setup from scratch. Another option is to get an explorer axle from the junkyard. About the same price, less work, upgrade to disc brakes, and ls installed from factory. You also get a chance to change your gear ratio if you wanted...

I do believe that the case is actually machined for the "tabs" of the clutch packs to stick out, so you would need a L/S case also.
 
I would get this. Better than a lsd and saves you the expense involved in setting up gears. I barely even notice mine back there except when I get on it too hard in a corner. Huge difference offroad though. Don't even need 4wd near as much.

l/s is an unpredictable at best, piss waste of time. a drop in locker is the most cost effective solution in my eyes
 
I vote lunchbox too, much more gooder... :) my Aussie (not made for the 28 spline axles) has seen enough abuse to twist an explorer 8.8 tube (well, break the plug welds on one side), bend a leaf spring, break a U joint yoke and bend a driveshaft, all in the same 1/4 turn of the driveshaft :)
