I searched around and didnt really find what im looking for. Everything I found was info for a 5.5" lift and ive only got a 4" rough county with stock radius arms.

I got my shock towers today so now I have to order shocks. Brand doesnt really matter at this point, I just need to know how long of a shock I need. Will a stock length shock from an f250 work for what I need or do I need a lifted f250 shock?

The only real thread I found was on explorer forum for a guy with 5.5" coils and extended radius arms. He used 32" extended length universal shocks that are about $100 each. Id like to not spend that much if possible.

Suggestions?

If he spent $100 each, he most likely bought a higher-end shock, as cheap shocks are more in the $30-40 range...

Although, if he is running 5.5" lift, and you only have 4.0", I would guess you want a shock that has an extended length about 1.5" shorter... Or something around 30.5"

If you walk into a parts store and ask for their cheapest shock with the right ends, and a 30.5" extended length, Im sure they can look it up in a catalogue or their computer.

good call...

That was so simple, im sorry to have wasted your time typing that!

Stock length according to the summit site are 29" so I'd say they'd work.

Weld the towers in and measure the compressed and extended length between the shock mounts, and subtract the smaller number from the larger to determine the amount of travel needed. Go by that dont just wing it like you've described you'll end up with a shock too short or too long (most likely too short).

Don't order shocks until you measure otherwise I guarantee you are wasting your money cuz they won't be the right ones. Every application is different you can't go off of someone else's suspension setup.

And there are a lot of cheaper options out there...

Good luck!

This is better advise than mine.

Agreed. Put the F-250 mounts where you want them, cycle the suspension to get your measurements, then go buy shocks.

Just a tip, full compression is easy to measure for with the coil spring removed (jack the axle up to the bumpstop, then add another inch to allow for bumpstop compression).
For full droop, have the spring in place, but fully relaxed and then measure.
It's possible you may have to lower the bumpstop down a bit so that a shock long enough for full droop does not bottom out on full compression.

I have a 4" lift and I'm running Rancho RS9000XL shocks with the f250 shock towers

But which ones? Like how much travel?

I have my old ones in the shop from my TTB lift and F250 towers...Could probably get the numbers off them.

Just for comparison. I'm running f-250 mounts with 5.5" lift springs on an explorer...

I have the rancho 999012 shocks. 19" compressed, 32" extended. 9 way adjustable.
