How to ruin a 2.3 Duratec

Resurrecting another old thread, but, was there ever an answer for newer engines?
My 2004 is only doing around 18~20 mpg around town, a dramatic drop from the 27 I used to get (although I do seem to get stuck in traffic/red lights more than I used to)
It doesn't seem to make black smoke or be particularly down on power, but, I'm pussy footing around most of the time (around 3,000rpm max)
Hopefully the lower rpm won't have caused cylinder wash
I won't have time to look at it until Thursday at earliest, if no replies by then I'll probably remove manifold to take a look

Same deal here on my 06 with automatic,Mostly around town driving with the occasional freeway run(about 50 mi)at legal speeds,Did get her close to 100 mph a few times but seemed to want to cut out in the upper 90'sLike it has a governor on it.

Does the 5 speed Mazda 'box' have governor as well? (not that it matters)
I've been up to an indicated 90 and it didn't feel safe enough to go any faster
Any idea how long it takes to get manifold off and if I'll need any gaskets/'O' rings when re-fitting?

Its not the trans that governs it, the newer Fords I've had hit cut the ignition.

Yep, I realise it's an ignition cut out, I was wondering if the auto is governed at a different speed to the manual I've only seen old diesels with mechanical governors

I was into it at about 95 or 97 when it started to cut out.
Has the 5 speed overdrive auto with a 4.10 rear end.
I really don't like to run the piss out of it like that but would be nice to know she's got it if I ever feel the need.
