How to: Explorer limited seats into 01 ranger

So after looking for a while i cannot find a COMPLETE how to guide for the popular seat swap. I just finished mine so i figured id contribute

The basics of this swap will apply to almost any 95 - 00 explorer into pretty much any ranger extended cab. in my case i have an 01 ranger and found 00 explorer limited heated/power leather seats.

Brief Explanation: a how to on installing explorer seats into a ranger



Tools Needed:
sockets
drill
1/2 drill bit
knife


Parts Needed:
Explorer Seats
Ranger seat belt pretensioners
1/2 x 3 grade 8 bolts, nuts, washers
3/8 black iron pipe for spacers. Cut to 7/8

1. Remove you old seats, then remove the seat belt pre-tensioners

2. Remove the four 8mm bolts holding the track assembly to the seat frame (see pic) Also disconnect the brown seat motor plug and small memory plug on the drivers side.

3. Unclip the clip holding the fabric in the rear corner on the inside of the seat.

4. Use a hammer to remove the pin holding the seat adjuster in (thats the thing with the blue srping in the pic). You may have to use the reclining handle to tilt the seat all the way forward.

5. Drill a 1/2 hole between the two that are already in the seat frame. Make sure you go all the way through the thin metal into the actual seat frame

6. Use a knife to remove some seat foam from the sides as necessary.

7. Using a 1/2 grade 8 bolt 3 inches long, spacer and nut, secure the seat belt pretensioner to the hole you just drilled. Use 7/16 washers on the bolt head, nut and as spacers between the seat frame and pretensioner. Make sure to get the spacer in between the seat fram on the outer thin metal.

8. Trim the corner of the plastic trim piece as necessary.

9. Cut a slot in the seat cover for the seat belt to slide through

10. Clip the fabric back into place and reinstall the seat track.

11. Remove the yellow wiring pulg if you seat has air bags. Clip your ranger seat belt plug where the yellow one was.

12. After you are all done, button it all back up and you will have something like this.

13. Mount the seats back in. Mine fit perfect, the only thing i had to do was enlarge the front inside mount on the seat.

WIRING:

MY seats are heated with power lumbar. I suggest you tap into a large gauge wire under the dash, and add your own 30 amp fuse.

Passenger:
Black - ground
Black/White - +12v fused 30amp
Grey/Yellow - +12v in run position
Blue/White - +12v fused 30amp (join with black/white wire)

Driver:
Black - ground
Black/White (large gauge) - +12v fused 30amp
Black/White (small gauge) - Ground
Grey/Yellow - +12v in run position
Blue/White - +12v fused 30amp (join with black/white wire)
Red/Black - +12V in run position (join with grey/yellow)
2x Green/Yellow +12V fused 30amp (join with black/white and blue/white)

THE REST OF THE WIRES ARE FOR MEMORY. IF YOU WANT MEMORY SEATS< GRAB THE SWITCH FROM THE EXPLORER DOOR AND CONNECT THE WIRES TO THE SAME COLORS ON THE SWITCH.

DO NOT TOUCH ANY WIRING ASSOCIATED WITH THE YELLOW CONNECTOR

That's it. Lumbar, heat and 6 way power will all work

I still have an eight gauge wire laying around from a previous amp install and the fuse holder to go with it...

I could make this work, but I was thinking something more luxurious. Like Lincoln seats perhaps.

8 awg is way overkill. 12 awg is more than enough.

those bolt right to my 88 ext cab tracks. just the seats themselves....none of the blippy blingy powerdickwasher stuff.

last seat i went with was from a 02 2 door though.

to mount the powerstuff to the old school gen 1 floor is some fab work.


makes a 01 look appealing.

i know i am getting older when i want a new cab cause you show how easy it is to get bling seats

Well those are the only dark Green I could find.

And I know what you mean about the cab

Doesn't anyone even post pics with their write ups? They are so helpful but no fricken pics! Ugh! I will figure it out. I was under the impression that there were only two power wires to connect but this writeup seems to indicate that there are 3 connections for the 30 amp fuse to be connected to.

Also, isn't the keyed/ignition part of the memory portion of the seat and not necessary to just make the seat function?
