I am lowering my 92 with a shackle and hanger kit and i was wdonering if I have to pull the bed off and drop the gas tank to get at the back of the frame? Anyonw done this on one this old before? How low could I go without getting into airbags? Anything is helpful.
 
You may be fine. I replaced my springs and didn't pull my bed. If I remember, one of my bolts was a bitch to get at. Now I would just cut it off and have new ones ready to go.

Thats perfect then I got all new hardware for everything so I didn't have to worry about trying to save rusty bolts. It goes on Wednesday on my day off I'll post some pics.
 
Im not familiar with many kits, but pulling the bed off will probably be best, even if your only changing the rear hangers/shackles, i would suggest doing a flip but your original hangers/shackles are probably too far deteriorated(typical). The hangers r most likely riveted to the frame - mine were. I fabbed a set of rear hangers, that will not rust through and bolted with grade 8 bolts and locknuts, and replaced shackles with ford replacements. i couldnt find a kit and didnt want to wait, so i made my own, but installed them the proper way for winter, and i plan on flipping them when i replace my front hangers(rusted bad)and arent as easily accessable from under, which ill probably pull my bed off and remove fuel tank for safety, maybe soon.

I replaced my rear hangers/shackles from underneath with a jack under the rear of the frame on one side at a time, i used a gas axe, but you may want to use a grinder to remove the rivets heads - again much easier with the bed off, plan on buying all new fasteners too(shackle through spring and into hanger, like 8$ for each nut and bolt!) easier to cut the old ones off with the gas axe. Also be sure you have good fasteners to the frame, if you use bolts (not much choice) be sure they have a shoulder(unthreaded shank) that passes through hanger and frame. Threads in this area add a stress riser and may shear off. If you pull your gas tank be sure to run it almost empty for easier handling. when reinstalling check clearences so nothing is hitting. good luck :)
 
yeah i went to my parts guy and i got all new stock replacement hardware PLUS i have the hardware from the kit. I'm doing with my bud whos been doing susupension for about 15 years so we should be able to do it up in about 3 hours we figure...with the bed on. I'm just gonna drop the tank and move it over to the passenger side I think.
 
just got it done. WHAT A BITCH!! I didn't take the bed off but I had to drop the tank entirely and I blew a hanger before so I couldn't drive the gas out of it. But it looks slick...took about 6 hours and a half a tank each of oxygen and acetalyne! The only problem....I want it lower already hahaha
