Will a 4.0 from a 1998 explorer bolt up to my 88 bronco 2?

Not sure if the motor mounts ever changed, and is engine is coming fully complete with harnesses minus clutch, flywheel, starter, and radiator. I need to know what else I'm looking at having to add to get it running

Well right back at you.....when in your first post did you say that you searched? Cause if you did you wouldn't have just posted what you did. A 98 4.0 is a pushrod motor which is no different from the rest. Search again there are plenty of post out there. If not then see ya later!

Of course it'll fit. The wiring is where you will have fun. There was a kid that put a 96 4.0 in a 84 b2 on here somewhere. He was from Coweta,OK. He used the dash and everything.

The reason 91-94 explorers are the popular swap into a gen 2 B2 is because its plug and play. Its simple.

Once you go out of that realm, it starts getting a lil more difficult. Anything can be done with enough time and money.

It'll work. A SOHC will not fit, an OHV will.

The worst thing about that year will be the wiring because it is after the change to the new style cam sensor.

Thats the way to get some help.


Vin "X" is the OHV. Thats the easier one to swap in, if fits a LOT easier.

During '98 they switched to a returnless fuel system, you could have either one, keep that in mind. A return style engine will work with the fuel system in your '88 without modifying.
