TDI Ranger Build

I would have kept the ranger condensor (plug in play to hvac box for ac lines) as well as the ranger rad and just adapted the vw e-fans to the rad, but that works too :icon_thumby:

Your way would have worked well but I have plans for the space occupied by the condenser and radiator. (see next post)

Intercooler Mounting

I mentioned earlier that I wanted to keep my radiator and intercooler tubing as simple as possible. Of course the simplest solution for a longitudinally-mounted TDI would mean both inlet and outlet of the intercooler be on the passenger side. It took a lot of looking but I found such an intercooler that fits between the Ranger frame rails. It is a little tight so I bought some cast 90's to replace the straight out inlet/outlet.

I trimmed the condenser bracketry a little and this guy simply slides in place! I'll probably trim the driver's side bracket a little more to shift it a little further towards the driver's side and gain clearance for the inlet/outlet.

Interesting to say the least. Subscribing to thread to tag along. Good luck with mods!

Cool project. I don't know how far I'd trust that radiator support though.

I can't believe how many of these things have rotted radiator supports. Seems like the first thing to rot out anymore.

My F150 is pretty bad, I'm gearing up to replace it soon (before winter).

You are correct sir. I'm going to box in my brackets as they were flexing almost as much as the rubber mounts.

I think he was referring to the rust. The rad support rusts from the inside out and once they start, they go fast. I've seen a lot of them that the entire bottom section is just gone.

You are indeed correct. I'd replace that thing now while it's torn down that far.

I'm looking forward to the outcome. I think a diesel is in my Explorer's future.

sub'd. my parents just bought an 02 jetta tdi w/70k on it and it has a suprising amount of pickup for how low the power rating is. i love the acceleration on the freeway with out having to downshift!

Any updates?
