How much power does the 2.5L have

So I’m looking at getting a ranger and I’ve came across this 2000 4cyl 2.5L manual with 156,000 miles. My question is, is that a lot of miles for the engine? How many miles can these engines take? I know that the Toyota picks can go for 300 plus easy but what about the fords? How much power do these things have I plan on filling up the bed and hauling it across country can it handle the load? Its also has a 3in lift so I think that will make a bit of a difference.

Filling up the bed, what does that mean to you? Is it maxing out the payload, or just using up all of the cubic volume? I'm guessing that you mean furniture and household stuff, which that engine will handle just fine.

The 2.5L is just an over-stroked 2.3L, and those engines have a great reputation. As long as the oil changes are kept up, along with plugs and such, it will last past 300,000 miles easy.

Horsepower rating is about 115-120ish with 140-145 ft lbs of torque. If I'm wrong, it's because I haven't looked at my Haynes manual in a while.

Yeah, filling up the bed is pretty general...my little 2.3 can haul 700 lbs without too much problem...but it does put quite a strain on the engine...

A couple of things you may want to check...before filling up the bed...spring shackles are known weak points...I've busted one of mine with a few too many pounds and bumps...and check for rust otherwise...a 2000 could be in mint shape or it could be dissolving like a candy mint before your very eyes...crawl around under the truck...check the rear spring mounts to see if they are rusted...and the frame all over...as well as the body mounts...if you see quite a bit of crusty orange coloured stuff under there then you might want to look at something else...

The 2.5 is a powerhouse, when put next to a 2.3. 7mm more stroke, higher flowing head, and a better camshaft.

My 98 is good for 3-4 car lengths in the 1/4 mile vs a 2.3 truck but, My 4.0 pushin 36"s would still blow It's doors off.

Insane is about right on the ratings.

The 98-99 had 118-119 hp, and the 00-few 01's had 120-121.
torque was like 2 pounds less on the new ones tho, since they had a couple more horses.
Overall its a great engine. Mine still has decent power and considering its a heavy mofo with big tires and a solid axle upfront. Just keep it tuned up and get a low restriction exhaust on it.

At 195k right now, and still has a decent amount of power for a 2.5L. Make sure you take out the slack in the throttle cable though so you are able to take advantage of all of the power the engine can make, as mine almost had 3/4" of slack in it, and I had to add 2 zipties to it to get it to full throttle.

I got 4 zipties on mine. Makes a HUGE difference.

IIRC the 2.5 is actually rated for a hair more power than the 2.9 was. I have yet to find a reason to complain about the power available out of my 2.9.

IIRC the 2.5 is actually rated for a hair more power than the 2.9 was.

Don't you mean the 2.8? 2.9's had around the same power as a 3.0

my dad has just shy of 300K on his 98 2.5L 5 speed. had it since new, replaced the clutch at 199K and the injectors and every sensor at 250K because i made him. he is religious with oil changes. and we rebuild the 7.5 rear axle twice. they are great motors. i had one in a 99 that survived about 4 ft of salt water in a nor-easter. it made it for about a week and then the salt got all the electrical system and was a total loss. 2.5=epic motor.
