2wd question? lifted the truck about 7 months ago and now i want to put mud in the air but i seem to not have a locking diff. is there like a locking pin in kit or can i just switch the diff out? havent done any research because it looks like a touchy subject not having a 4wd and all. any help would be much appreciated i can post some picks of my truck tonight or something thanks again!

Find a cheap axle with a L/S and swap it in.

I used to have an open 8.8 in mine, but i happened upon a used mustang l/s diff for around 125 and just dropped it in. As long as you have the right sized diff and spline on the axles you could just replace your open with it.

Unless you find a used locker there aren't any cheap alternatives. And yes locking a 2wd in my opinion is a waste.

Why is it a waste? IMO no truck should have never left the factory without atleast a limited slip.... A locked 2wd atleast makes it semi-useful.

for the average person a locked 2wd will do just fine. This, however is not the thread for it. there was a question and it has been answered.... nobody asked for an opinion on 2wd vs 4wd.

Useful for what? In case you get stuck in your dirt driveway? When you drive around town what good does it do for you to pay extra cash to ford for them to put a limited slip in?

Ever had to go up a hill on wet grass, maybe tow a boat out of the water... an open diff is an option that shouldn't exist, lol. It's like ordering a vehicle without cupholders just because you can hold your drink, you don't need them. Comes in handy every once in a while....

It would come in handy to have one. From a manufacturers view its an added cost to the customer that typically won't be needed.

if you can find an axle with a l/s already in it from a pic/n/pull that would be the quickest just instal and reconnect the brake lines and your all set

You dont have to replace the entire axle but it may be cheaper and easier. Have you changed the gears in your axle now?

Its obvious a 4x4 will ultimately provide better traction, so why argue? It should also be obvious that a locked 2wd will out perform an open 2wd. I say lock it. If you don't have the funds now, save a few more paychecks.
