86 Ranger Diesel Issues

Picked up a 1986 Ranger with the Mitsubishi Turbo Diesel. Seller thought it might have a blown head gasket, but he isn't sure.

It was leaking from the water neck below the water pump, like gushing out. Found out the gaskets weren't available, and someone siliconed it in. Cleaned it up, made gaskets, and its fine now.

It seems like it's having a fuel starvation issue. It will run and idle good cold, and drive good in gear for about 10 seconds, then it will rev down and stall out. If you baby it along, it will continue running barely. Usually I would have to wait a few seconds, crank it over, it will slowly restart, and idle fine. And repeat.

Should I change the fuel filters and hope for the best? No oil in coolant, and no coolant in oil.

plus,there's an electric fuel pump on the frame below the driver's side firewall-it can cause issues if it's not working.

that lower water neck should have an o-ring seal on it.

Yea, after driving it for a bit, the water neck is trickling coolant. O-ring sounds like a good idea!

My experience with fuel pumps in gas engines is it usually works or it doesn't. Is the electric fuel pump on the frame rail the only pump this engine has?

the main pump is the injector pump on the engines left side.the electric pump on the frame is mostly a priming pump,but if it's not functioning it can cause enough resistance to fuel flow that the injector pump gets starved for fuel.

I checked the electric pump, it was working fine. There was however an extra inline filter between the electric pump and the tank that someone spliced in at one time. It was clogged up so much, that diesel wouldn`t flow out the other end of the filter on it`s own. I installed a new one, and no loss of power or stalling at all!

Now, that o-ring sounds like a good idea! I was just going to cut a thicker gasket and use some sealant, because my homemade gasket in there now is just trickling a little bit, but a whole lot better then just having that water neck siliconed in!

Hopefully that`s the last water leak, and I can purge all the air out of the system. If it stays cool, I guess the head gasket is good!

Do you know what size o-ring I should use for the lower water neck? It seems like it would be hard to get the oring to stay while tighting up the lower water neck. I was thinking a thick gasket and sealant should work.

After fixing the water pump leak, and pressurizing the cooling system, a leak popped out at the back of the engine. Hopefully its a coolant line, and not a head gasket, but I believe it is, because there is lots of steam and air bubbles coming out the top to the overflow.

Oh well, upper engine gasket set, head pressure test (crack check), and resurfacing. Still into this truck including purchass for less then $1000 when all is said and done.

Turned out to be a block heater. Rad cap wasn't venting, and the block heater blew out the side of the block. New block heater and all is good. Now its my daily driver!

Gwaii tends to fade in and out of TRS it seems when his work load picks up. He has quite a few interesting threads worth reading! That and diesel rangers are about as rare as they get.

Oh I dunno. Diesel Rangers and Gwaii in Spring and Summer might be rare, but threads about diesel Rangers are fairly abundant these days.
