i know there are a ton of the post out there and iv looked at some but my 7.5 axle is about to go and i need a new one. i know i have to switch the spring perches but im still confused about the gearing so is the swap hard? what axle should i look for? i have a 97 4x4 3.0

95 and up Explorer axles are the ones to look for.
1. They have 31 spline shafts (vs. the 28 splines found on Rangers).
2. They have disk brakes (vs. drum)

The gearing is still gray area for you being you don't know what gears you have. I believe the 3.0's came with 2 different gear ratios. So you maybe to get away with not having to re-gear.
 
Do some reading in the tech library and all your questions will be answered.

You can find your axle gear code on the drivers door pillar or on the tag on the rear end. Check the tech library for code break-downs or google them.
