Cleaning Oil Pick Up Screen

Hey guys, well i got extremely low oil pressure on both my 2.9s, pretty sure the pick up screens are clogged. Is there anyway to clean them up with out pulling the engine to drop the pan. I read that some guys pour kerosene down into the pan and let it sit then drain it out. This to me seems risky but could be worth it if it works....

How does that seem risky?

Fill the engine with kerosene, add a gallon to the oil that is already in there. Let it set over night, change the oil, and fire it up.

Yeah, no risk there. He!!, at work we've replaced all the oil in the crankcase with diesel fuel and ran the engine up to temp to clean it out.

fill with trans fluid, run for 5 min, drain, fill with cheep oil, drain, change filter and fill with your favorite oil. i did this in my jeep when i bought it, had been sitting for 4 years, oil looked like mud. looked brand new after i flushed it.

That works too, but I wouldn't recommend it in his case because the root problem is bad oil pressure issues.

well if it is actually just the screen or pickup tube, it should be fine. also, on a side note, cant you just drop the pan and remove the screen?

i would drop the pan, but on our bronco ii's u have to pull the engine or drop the tranny....gonna fill em up with kerosene tomorrow, do you guys think i can let em sit with kerosene for a week or atleast 5 days to really let it work?

Yes, but the kerosene will water things down a lot and get things moving from the screen without the need to run the engine.

Yeah, you can let it sit for a month if you want.

What I would do is let it set for a while with Kerosene in it, a few days if you want to. Then drain it, cheap filter, 5 qts ATF, run it for a little bit, 15 to 20 minutes assuming it has some pressure back. Then change it again for real, good oil, good filter.
