so i've actually been spending a fair bit of time lately figureing things out on this thing.my key points of concern have been cooling,throttle,charging,and shifting.
i'll start with cooling.
as can be seen here,there's very little room for a radiator.this has been a major concern of mine from the start of this build...the car has been built around this engine and i can't afford to get another jag v12,so i have to protect it and cooling is an issue with this engine even in it's stock installation.
i've been in negotiations with a rad shop about getting a custom made rad done for this thing,and i'm not sure i trust this guy's ideas over my own.
i was suggesting stacking two 2'' cores to get more area as i have room for a 4'' core,but the rad guy figures it would be too hard to get air through that.he thinks a single 2'' core will be better.now,once i make room for the tanks the core size is only 17'' wide and 15'' tall.that's not very much radiant area for an engine this size.
the rad will also incorporate a normal trans cooler,with an auxillary cooler mounted as would be expected.
i also have the original jag oil cooler for this engine which will be mounted behind the air dam.the ducts in the air dam will be feeding air to this cooler.
in the above picture some may notice the alternator...it's not the same ford one in earlier pics.this is actually the original gt6 alternator.
i've decided to switch to this one for several reasons-at the top is that it's an original part of the car.so much has been changed out on this thing it's a cause for celebration whenever i can use an original part.
sharp eyes here will pick out the lucas name from the back of this part.while some may question the wisdom of using a lucas component deliberately-well,it wouldn't be the first time my wisdom was in question.
the other advantages of this choise in alternators is that it already has a v-belt pully and it's smaller than the ford one.
while it doesn't have the charging capacity of a newer,bigger alternator,i don't really need it as there is very little in the way of electrical load on this car.
next issue...throttle linkage.while i have the carbs linked together,they are still not hooked to the gas pedal.i have been looking at different ways to make this connection,including running a cable to the carb links,but have settled on a fully linked design.while it's still all floating around in my head,i finally have the way to link all these bits together figured out.look for some metal thingys to be made in the near future.
ok....last but surely not least,the shifter.
i've found that the cable does not give a precise enough shift.the small amount of play in the cable is too much for the short shifter i've built.the th400 in this car was designed for a shifter around three times the length of this one.i'll be making a very tight linkage system,as well as reducing the tension on the detent spring in the transmission to ease shifting effort.
once again,more metal work.
plus,i still have to get a driveshaft into this pig.
