Crossmember removal poll.

This is the crossmember that the tire carrier bracket bolts to. It's "gone" so I am considering just grinding it out and being done with it because it's gonna kill the clean look I'm going for with the frame.

The crossmember bein ate up isn't good, but I see a MORE SERIOUS situation with the leaf spring shackle rust to h*ll and definitely NOT ATTACHED!

I went the 2X4 rectangular tubin route myself for strength & stability:

a piece of 2x4 steel fits great...but like was said, it will prevent you from putting a bumper back on.

Is the truck gonna have a bumper?? If so then don't worry about taking it out.

Yeah it's gonna have a bumper, but it's already out and wasn't doing anything anyway.

bolting in a new one should be plenty strong enough for your application, unless you are planning on some heavy duty offroading with it

No serious offroading, just some light trails and mall crawling.

Why is this question being asked????? Cross members are important and to take one out without replacing is just &^$#&* stupid......even more so since you have it torn down.

Because I have one bolted in about 6" infront of it, and this isn't even a real crossmember in my opinion. It's way too thin, even on rust free trucks.

GASP Where did my shackles go!

I ground out the rivets on the two rear mounts and the drivers front mount, I figured since I have all three sitting around, and the front passengers is new anyway, I'd replace them. I'm also replacing the leaf springs, axle, and driveshaft while I'm in there.

It would also probably prevent me from running my hitch. So I'm probably going to go with the 6"x3/8" flat stock or something close to it.

NEVER underestimate something which may have been engineered to serve a certain purpose, especially if that purpose might be structural.

No crossmembers would look real clean.......but.....you'll twist the frame unless you put a thick piece of flat-bar(3/8 inch thick by 6 inch wide) back there somewhere in place of the bad/temporary crossmembers...
