I just bought a 1978 F-100 half ton truck. I need to replace the passenger side rear axle because it is bent. What year trucks used the same axle?

What axle is it?

Early 70s to late 80s at least.

Thanks guys. My axle is not causing any real problems, noise or vibration, it is just causing the rear tire/wheel to wooble some. My rear drum also needs to be replaced. I would like to find a rear axle that is better for towing/hauling. I have a 3.00 ratio at the moment.

You could swap in a Ford 9.75"? It won't have a 3.00 Ratio, but they make 3.08 gear sets (lowest it came stock is 3.55 IIRC). It'll be at least as strong as the 9" for damn sure. They're kinda weird on lug patterns, but I know they went down into 5 and 6 lug stuff, and you could always redrill the axle flanges and brakes and put studs in that fit your current rims if it has the same number studs originally. Well, other stud counts will work too, but it's just easier/cleaner/stronger.

If you want a good towing axle, with good gears, get a 10.5" with 4.10s. Those things are beasts. You will have to do something about rims though, because I think those only came in 6 and 8 lug.
