I saw an ad for a am/fm/cd plyr from an '06 F-150 model # 6L3T18C869AD. What do you think is it a plug n play installation?

I looked upo that part number and am pretty confidfent in saying thast the answer is a definite NO.

Even if the connections are the same, the radio mounting is different. The Ranger radios from around 1995 through 2011 all mount in the same way, by clipping into the dash bezel. That F-150 Radio appears to bolt to the dash structure under neath the radio bezel. In addition the Ranger radios are approximately double din size on the face. Slightly larger, but not by much. From the looks of radio install kits for that year of F-150 the face of the radio is a fair bit larger and would not fit the opening in the ranger radio bezel.

What exactly are you hoping to gain from a radio swap?

There were factory am/fm/cd radios for the Ranger that will slot right into your truck (aka plun-n-play). They could also be found in other Fords into the early 2000s at least, like the F-250 through 2003. In fact, being a 2011, I'm surprised that your truck doesn't have one already. That said, if going to the effort to swap radios, I'd look to an aftermarket upgrade with more features.

The deal is the truck I have is an ex-fleet vehicle (very few options) and I was hoping to upgrade it's am/fm Ranger/Crown Vic set to one w/a cd player. This F-150 one is $10 and very local. At some point a couple of dash bulbs need to be replaced so the so the stuff around the radio is going to be apart. I may just wire in an external audio input into the amp that is in the existing set and use a portable player. I have a lot of cd's and not a lot of extra funds, retired.

Well that F-150 Radio isn't going to be your solution.

I'd recommend hitting up your local salvage yards and seeing what you can find. All the rangers from 95-11 have radios that you caan use, as do Mazda pickups of the same period. Explorers through 2001 and maybe later. The Super Duties had them from 1998 through atleast 2003, my 2000 F-250 literally had the same radio as my 99 Ranger and my dad's 2001 Ranger. I'd imagine that the E series vans probably had them too. Likely some of the 1997+ F-150s, but I don't know the year range. I seem to recall that some of the cars had them as well, but I don't remember which ones.

If your truck has base sound I'd be surprised if it had a separate amp. Most vehicles that had these radios did not have one.

I'd verify if yours did or did not. Generally if it has a single plug it did not. If not I'd look for a replacement from a vehicle with basic sound package as those with premium sound were designed to be used with an amp. I ran into that with my 99. I swapped the head unit for one from an Explorer with premium sound, and since I did not have the amp the sound output was not as good as the original headunit.

If you do actually have an amp, I can't give any suggestions as I don't know how that may have changed over the years.

I don't know about wiring in an external audio input. Possibly consider trying an FM modulator?
