Hey guys,
Im currently in the process of rebuilding the 4.0 OHV out of my 99 Ranger and have been referencing this article a lot. https://www.enginebuildermag.com/2001/04/rebuilding-the-ford-4-0l-pushrod-v6/

Everything is currently at the machine shop but they’re having a lot of trouble sourcing some parts, mainly the correct pistons. According to that article, both the crankshaft and pistons were changed in 1999 to be slightly lighter. Every piston they’ve tried is about 80 grams heavier per piston, which I’m being told is way to much of a weight difference and would be extremely expensive to rebalance.

My next thought was to try and find a 97JM crankshaft that the article mentions which should have the same snout and 8 bolt pattern, but heavier counterweights for the heavier pistons. I was able to locate one but it’s out of a SOHC engine. The article says the cranks are interchangeable but I have no way to verify that.

Does anyone have a source to find pistons in the correct weight range, or confirm if the 97JM from the SOHC will work in the OHV?

Thanks
