This Old XLT

On the transmission front, after having returned the truck to the shop twice, it now seems to run quieter, but will still have an audible pair of "clunks" when I slow from maybe, 45mph for a stop when it slows to about 10mph.

Decoding the door jamb info, it has a 5R44E. Does anyone else with this transmission have such problems with it?

Chunks are not mounts or ujoints?

They feel and sound like two rapid downshifts while braking.

I Need to replace the shocks all around on the truck and I keep seeing reference to coil and torsion bars when sourcing front shocks. Was this model truck made with 2 different suspensions?

Yes they were for 2WD vehicles.

Thanks. Which were for 2WD vehicles?

I believe the 2wd had both types of front suspension, no idea why. Holdover from a previous platform?

Mine's got coils- impossible to miss looking under the front end. I'm assuming if you don't see coils you've got the torsion bar version.

It started off with the torsion 2wd's only being the Edge and Offroad models but apparently it got kinda random, I've been on here through almost all of that era of Ranger and that's what I remember but I gotta admit I don't remember everything since I wasn't paying that much attention

Working between the rotten weather days, I finally got the front shocks replaced. The old ones were KYB gas shocks that were completely crapped out. It's made a big difference in driving it. Now to find more dry days to do the rear shocks. Does anyone know a source for 60/40 drivers seat cushions? My covers are in nice shape, but the cushions are flattened out severely.

Thanks for all the help so far!

I wanted to mention one thing about the ignition lock cylinder that I had replaced I had 2 good programmed keys and a broken cylinder. I found a smith on Ebay that sold lock cylinders set up to accept the original programmed keys. He matched my key from a photograph I Emailed to him. I got the cylinder in about 3 days and it has worked flawlessly. Here is the item number that is still good at the time of this posting: 141024251120 Hope it helps someone else.

After having that trouble, I went to replace the rear brakes. That saga is documented here, https://www.therangerstation.com/fo...me-replacing-rear-10-inch-drum-brakes.210804/

After getting the truck home I checked the radiator and found it to be low on coolant. The overflow bottle never seemed to raise or lower as has been the case with all the other Fords i've owned. I did a pressure test on the system and it would not hold pressure and I couldn't find a leak. I took the truck to the garage and they found the used radiator that the former owner put in had a leak at the top. I had that replaced and when I got it home the overflow hose was spraying water around the radiator fitting. I've never seen a stopped overflow hose before. They fixed that and now I hope to replace the erratic thermostat and have done with the cooling problems.

The things I find that is the matter with this truck just amazes me. I got a new thermostat and gasket and removed the thermostat housing. the thermostat was glued onto the housing with form a gasket backwards, with the rod on the thermal element out of it's place in the center and the shutter part way open. I installed the new one and drained the overflow and washer fluid bottles and made sure they were clear from the radiator. The engine maintains the center of the temp gauge, overflows to the bottle and recovers from it. I hope there are no more surprises.
