92 ford ranger 4x4 4.0. Problem, starter worked fine, then it didn't work at all, doing nothing in between all with in 2 hours. We put a tranny in the truck and in the middle, we started the truck to test the tranny starter worked fine. When we finished the install, not touching the starter since before, it didn't work anymore. So I pull the starter down, leaving the wires on, push it up the the engine as a ground, hit the key and the starter rolls like it should. SO then I put it back in, hit the key and nothing.

What should i be looking for? Is the common and if it is, what causes it? Is it time for a new starter?

thanks

Sounds like it could be a neutral switch problem maybe? I ran into this problem once when I to the bank a week ago. Usually when the truck is left in gear you can't get the keys outta the ignition. I left the gear selector barely in park so it left me have my keys but it cut the starter cause it though I was still in gear (auto trans). I came back dumbfounded that my truck wouldn't start but all i had to do was push the selector up a bit (after getting wet in the show checking my starter.....yuck).

Maybe something is out of adjustment in your linkages? idk, im not much of an expert

well, the starter solenoid clicks, but the starter wont run. I thing everything is fine in that aspect, but i will have to give it a little look just in case.

The seloniod will still get juice when your in gear (or thinks your in gear) and you try to start it.

This is a manual and when I turn the key clutch out, it doesn't click, clutch in, the solenoid clicks. I am thinking it is more of a problem with the starter, but thanks for the advise, just not sure you are correct on that one or maybe I don't understand what you are saying.

No, probably not. I'm just somewhat familiar with the 5r55e but not the manuals.
