So i just pivked up a 92 Ranger xlt 2.3 a few weeks ago. The first time i tried to start it, i turned the key and no start. Left key on and cross jumped the starter solenoid....fired right up. Replaced the solenoid but cracked plastic body of the new solenoid during installation. Taped it up with some electrical tape and turned the key. Success. Now started with key as it should. Buy another solenoid since i cracked that one and replace it again. No fire from key. Back to original issue. Only starts with cross jump. I think wtf, so i put the cracked but functional one back in....nothing. only cross jump. Even though it functioned 5 minutes before. I dont get it. Cant have 2 brand new solenoids that are faulty. 1 with 5 starts on it. The other never once except with cross jump. Any ideas?

Does it ground by being bolted on or have a ground wire? I'm thinking maybe grounding needs to be cleaned up.

Other wise maybe a neutral/clutch switch problem?

You’re actually talking about the starter relay. The solenoid is part of the starter itself.

To answer Senornoob’s question, the starter relay grounds itself through the mounting base.

Instead of guessing, get a meter or test light and confirm that the key switch is sending voltage to the small terminal on the starter relay when you turn the key. If not, check clutch switch, if manual trans or neutral safety switch if automatic. Also check function of key switch. It sounds like you have a loose connection somewhere or failing switch contacts in one of those components.
