Trying to find some help as to why my 2.8L pops and backfires when i use engine braking, i have had the timing all over the place and that gave me no solution, it had some vacuum leaks a little while ago ( bad brake booster, caps came off the rear of the carb etc.) could a small leak cause this to happen?
Has a new cap and rotor also, plugs and wires are next on the list

any help?

hmmm..

Do you have the stock exhaust?

Mine was doing the same thing. It would pop and backfire reving it up just sitting. Check the exhaust manifold gaskets.

I have/had the stock exhaust and i could still hear it through a little leak in one of the flange gaskets. I took the old muffler off and due to some measuring problems i am running straight cat until i have some extra time to repair my mistake, but now with no muffler omg its crazy although funny to see some people jump when it backfires lol. ill Get some new manifold gaskets and see what happens

A super low restriction exhaust (like nothing after the cat) will cause all kinds of snap-crackle-pop.

The leak around the flange could cause it also. If you live where you don't have to worry about emissions, you might want to consider the duraspark conversion. I did mine and wish I had done it sooner. It allows you to get rid of the computer and the POS feedback carb.

Ya i wish, if i didn't live in California it would already have a 460 in it lol, ill replace the manifold gaskets put another one on to stop the flange leak and stick my flowmaster on, well see what happens.

Try putting the muffler on first, I am almost positive that is your problem. Everything I have been around with a loud exhaust will do that when you engine brake or coming back down to idle after a high RPM.

so if i remove the cat and just run the flowmaster (which i was planning on doing) will it make it more likely to do it since removing the cat will lower the restriction or do you think the muffler will have enough resistance.

Leave the cat. My F-150 with 2 cats and a glasspack per bank still pops if I let it.

Muffler was the problem put the flowmaster on and no more popping now there is a nice gurgle with a couple of the low pops of a performance muffler, so i might be ok removing the cat also if not then ill just throw it back on, strange how the muffler can do so much haha
