first off, truck specs.
06 FX4 Level II
8.8 torsen rear diff.

Alright, so a while back, couple months ago my pinion bearing had gone bad. had it replaced as well as al lthe other seals/bearings in the rear end.

it has started whistling again. first time it was due to a u joint that was bad that i failed to replace on time. so i ate the cost of replacement parts/labour.

however this time, ujoint is fine. im guessing the shop did something wrong, or overtightened something. no idea. however they are trying to blame it on my exhaust. i have MBRP turndown, with the tip pointed at a 45* angle towards the passenger side of the truck. not pointing at the diff, but its not far from it. is this a legit concern? i do a lot of highway miles.

i think their just trying to BS me personally, as that exhaust has been on since july 2012 and it hadnt caused any diff problems at all. but maybe with the new parts in, it did? no idea.

just looking for any pointers, tips, etc. regarding why it would be bad again after only 5,000 miles. when the first 40,000 miles i had the truck exactly how it is now it was fine.

is this a common problem?

The exhaust shouldn't have anything to do with the diff at all. Typically when bearing goes bad shortly after a rebuild it's 1 of 2 things; if the diff had a lot of metal it wasn't cleaned good enough including the axle tubes, or the bearing preload is too tight. A lot of places will toss the old crush sleave back in and get the preload too tight. You have to catch bad pinion bearings quickly if not you'll trash the gears and they will whine anyway. Does it whine all the time, just coasting, or under load? If that shop has a warranty and you are still in the time frame; they should stand behind their work. If not chalk it up to experience and find a better quality shop.

I can't remember how many miles I was at when they did it, but they have a 20,000 km warranty. Which for me is just over 4 months.

It's just under load, right around 60-65 mph. Exactly like last time. I'll have to look at my previous records to see when it was done for sure. Just wanted to make sure the exhaust actually didn't have anything to do with it. I was 99% sure it didn't though since it was like that for a year with no issues.

We shall see what they do with it. It's my local ford dealership.

I would not think that the exhaust would do that. I have seen lots of exhausts run close to the diff with no issues like what you describe.

Just looked at my old work orders, first time I mentioned there was a slight whine again they came back and wrote on the work order the pinion but (I think) was tight.

They didn't tell me that though. So I'll show the that and they better fix it. A new law just passed up here regarding repairs and automotive work. So I should be good. I hope.

preload to tight...

Yeah. That's it.
I'm runnin on an hour of sleep lol. I'm a little out of it lol.

Shall see what they say when I mention that.
I love the place they do decent work for a good price. But if they fight me on this one and keep trying to tell me it's my exhaust there's gonna be an angry customer haha.

they looked at the rear again, and mentioned that the previous note "pinion is right" means there's no play in it and there's nothing wrong. It's my exhaust causing problems. Um, no. That exhaust has been there for over a year and 30,000 miles and has never caused any issues. The issue only came when I failed to replace a u joint in time, they fixed it and it went bad again. Obviously they ****ed up.

Don't think I'll be going back there....

Oh and they took 3.5 hours to align my truck, and had to balance my new tires twice before they got it right.... 1.5 days and $510....

Holy shit 510$ there apparently inexperienced I would tell them to shove it. Then fight the bill.

yeah its ridiculous. im gonan tell them when i go in for my next oil change to get in there, figure out the problem, fix it properly, and im not paying for it, or the oil change/inspection.

see what they say. if they were smart they would go along with it.
they are good people, but if they dont run their business right being a good person wont help them lol
