Hey everyone,

Been dealing with wet floors for a little bit and decided to rip the carpet out and assess the damage. Honestly, there was a lot less than I expected (so far).

It seems like the only rust may be what I have pictured here (that’d be nice, huh?). Anyways, I was wondering how I could go about repairing that and then later identifying where the water’s coming from. Can I cut it out and find some sort of patch panel online? What would that even be called? I don’t think the floor panel replacements went out that far.

Also, if anyone has any suggestions on getting the change/phone holder out, that’d be very much appreciated. It’s the last thing holding my carpet down, and as you can see in the third pic, I have no idea how to get the screws out (if they even are screws)

Thanks a ton!

I don't see any rust holes? I would put a wire wheel on the end of a drill and get all the loose rust off, and then get yourself some rustoleum rusty metal primer and coat it with that. That will stop the rust. You can get a quart can and throw-away brush and brush it on (recommend that) or you can mask the area off and get a spray can of it. Just make sure you shake the spray can or stir the paint can up really really good. This paint has a lot of solids in it, it works well. But all the goodies will be in the bottom of the can if you do not stir it up good. The spray can will clog easily if you do not shake it really good.

Took me a minute to find that last picture. I thought you were talking about the rust around the screw holes.
I'm with franklin2 on this one. Use a brush. The rusty metal primer is some seriously thick stuff. It's the same color as the rust...

Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Brown

As for the other, I'm not super familiar with newer trucks. Can you post a picture of what you're trying to remove?

I’ll try to upload another picture of what I’m trying to remove after the gym. Sorry about how they uploaded earlier, I couldnt for the life of me get them to upload the same way on my phone.

The rustoleum was my initial thought, but how well does that work? I always heard if you want to “do it right” the best thing to do is cut it out and replace with a clean patch. I’m not adverse to going that route, just don’t know if there’s a patch panel to cover that area or if I have to try to make somethin myself.

And yes, no rust holes yet but I like to catch and fix things as early as I can before they become a bigger problem. Learned that the hard way with my bed unfortunately lol

That whole plastic piece is what I need to get out. The holes there are always covered by a piece of plastic, which is why I’m so confused as to why its so dirty, or corroded, or whatever’s going on.

Get all that junk out of there, there is probably a couple more screws up that way.

If the floor is solid after you get the rust off, there is no reason to cut it out. Rusty metal primer is just that, it works very good to stop the rust. Just get as much of the loose rust off that you can.

The back is loose, the problem is that I cant seem to scrape all the crap off the screws (if they are screws) in the front two holes pictured to even get a driver tip into them.

If that's anything like my cupholder one, it was held on by 2 large plastic clips that twisted and locked into a plastic plate below it that was then screwed to the floorboard.

Got distracted by work and then needing to replace a wheel bearing, and while at it did the cv axle, too.

That could definitely be it. Will try to figure this out and drop an update when I do. Thanks guys for your help.

If there are screws at the bottom, they would likely be #2 Phillips. I’ve never taken one of those out before but I wouldn’t be surprised if they were rusted to junk. All it would take would be to spill some stuff that seeps down in and boom. I never liked the recessed screws Ford had a habit of using. I actually used some really long stainless #8 screws with stainless fender washers to bolt the shifter trim down in my Choptop to get away from the recessed screws.

You were correct. They were #2 phillips. The front two screws were absolutely destroyed. I ended up having to dremel around them to get the tray out. Decided I'm going either A. Design and 3-D print a more functional replacement or B. Do a center console swap (unlikely unless I find a real good deal).

Floor is solid enough that this weekend I'm going to be grinding all the rust out, hitting it with some Naval Jelly, and repainting.

Thanks all for the help

Glad you got it. I’ve become a huge fan of stainless fasteners where I can use them because rust becomes much less of an issue. I also don’t like recessed fasteners when it’s not necessary.
