After more than 620,000 miles the transmission in my truck is starting to go. I have an 84 4 x 4 V6 with a Toyo Kogyo 5spd. I am having trouble finding a replacement and have a few questions and hoping someone here has the knowledge to help me out. Are all 84-85 Toyo Kogyo 4x4 5spd’s the same? Will a 85 Bronco 5spd work? I found an 85 Ranger gearbox, but the case is slightly different, has a flat deck machined into the top like a plate or a bracket would be bolted to it and the Bell housing/throwout bearing assembly is different. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

The newer transmission [m5od] have an integral bellhousing, so you will need a trans from the same engine. If yours is a 2.8, i believe a 2.9 and 4.0 have the same bolt pattern but you may have to research starters and clutches. 2.3 is its own bolt pattern and hard to find an m5od. Others here will have much better info if you tell us what engine you have,

Thanks for the reply. My truck has the 2.8 V6. If at all possible I would like to try to stay with the Toyo Kogyo trans to eliminate all the clutch, shifter and driveline problems I may run into changing transmissions. I have found a few of the Toyo trans either from 85 Rangers or 85 Bronco II’s but I am being told that those 85 Toyo transmissions will not fit my 84 and I am having trouble finding information on interchangeability Between model year Rangers and Rangers/Broncos.
