I bought an 86 Ranger new. It was my first new car. I still have it. I gave it to my Dad 20 years ago. He drove it until he passed away 5 years ago and it has since sat. I am trying to restore it. I replaced the battery and the little thing started right up. I couldn’t believe it! Wow what an engine that I4 !!! I joined Ranger Station to get help. It has a rough idle and won’t increase rpm

Pour some Seafoam in the fuel tank, and put some good fuel in it. Then keep running it as much as possible to run the Seafoam and the newer fuel through it. The ethanol fuel in it now separates, attracts water, and is generally terrible for engines. But the gov makes us run it. The ethanol fuel does ok unless you let something sit. Same reason it ruins lawnmowers, weedeaters, etc.

Definitely sounds like stale gas. You can pull the fuel line at the engine and cycle the key to drain it into a bucket if you wanna clean things up faster. It took 2 tanks of premium to get my wife's truck to run right after sitting that long.
