Heater fitting help

So I'm replacing a water inlet elbow and I'm not sure what to put on the threads. I know metal on metal contact in a n engine usually requires a gasket but what should I put on it?

I'm assuming a NPT type thread. I use pipe thread sealant with PTFE in it.

It is a pipe thread, any time there are threads sealing a liquid without a flared tube it is pipe thread. You can use either pipe thread sealer, or black silicone RTV.

Teflon tape works well too. That's what I use most times for NPT stuff. The liquid sealers and dopes work too but the next time you need to service whatever you're working on it's IMHO a bigger mess to clean up. YMMV.
