I have an 87 ranger 4 × 4. I have 4.56 gears 7.5 rear axle d28 front axle. There is a local guy on market place that have an early ranger with a 7.5 and a d35 with 3.73 gears. I have 30 inch tires and would like to go a little taller. Is this doable

I would keep the 4.56 gears. Even when my Ranger was in factory condition, the 3.73 gears with the 4.0 SOHC was finding the gearing a bit wanting on the steeper hills. It really should have 4.10 gears for this area. Now with the 31" tires, it really should have 4.56 since 4.27 isn't available for both front and rear differentials.

Your call but with a taller tire than 30", I wouldn't go any higher than 4.10.

I would keep the 4.56 gears, the 2.9 needs that extra torque.
