Just wondering what everyone thinks would be the best gear ratio for the rear in a 2wd ranger with a 2.3l turbo, and a 5speed out of a turbo coupe (3.97 1st gear). I currently have a 3.45 rear gear with a limited slip. The truck is gonna be a street truck, occasional drag racing.. Is it Worth swapping for something else? Tire size will be around +/- 27" tall? What does everyone think would be the best gear

If I were you I would wait and run what you have now. Im thinking a little lower gear might be in your future though. Maybe 3.73. What RPMs are you looking for out on the freeway? There are gear ratio calculators on the web. Do a search. Im not that familiar with the 2.3 and where the power range will be with a turbo.

Just for fun you could get an old 5-speed with transfer case and set it up, in essence, as a dual speed differential, not using the front drive line output.
Re-gear for your purpose.

Yes, 3.45 is for top speed, 4.10 would be for better low speed, so 3.73 would be the compromise ratio, OK for both but not great at either, :)

Guess it's a good idea to get it running and try it out. Probably a good gear for the the highway or the street.

i suspect you will be happy with the gear youve already got. that's the same gear the 5 speed turbo coupes got, and the auto's were 3.73. remember, more load means more boost, so gearing low may have a negative impact on engine power under boost.

Good deal. I'm pretty sure it's a limited slip rear too. So it should be pretty good on the street. We will see as soon as I get her running right

Youll most likely be happiest with what you have. Those 2.3L turbos make good mid range power. Cruising is very comfortable with one of those engines and 3.27, 3.45, 3.55 gears.

You wont get off the line like a drag car but you will still move and have plenty of go after about 10mph. Shifting will also be so much smoother with 3.45 or 3.27 gears. If its a daily driver/fun truck 3.45 is a great ratio.

I would say that 3.27 gears would be the best for a turboed truck. The higher the gear, the easier it is to load the turbo and build boost. However, a 3.27 would still allow decent acceleration before the turbo spools up.

My buddy had a turbo fox and he went from 3.27's to just 3.55's, and is having a much harder time fully loading the turbo. However, the lower gears help a ton in autocross, so for a street car/truck, your stock 3.45's would probably be fine.
