My 2011 4.0L A/T 2WD Ranger came w/ a reusable Ford A/T pan gasket. So have done a couple A/T filter changes and have these kicking around that I never used. That reusable gasket is awesome. No permatex to have to dick with. It's basically an o-ring type seal. Anyway, these are one day...

Dang, there are for a 2wd transmission. I’d be all over it if they were for a 4x4.

4x4 has a deeper pan, but wouldn't the gasket be the same?

New filters commonly come with them though. If you're buying a filter, even free might not be worth it.

FWIW, I could not find that exact, but the replacement F5TZ.... fordpartscatalog lists 37 different fitment options and none of them specify 2wd or 4wd - every RBV permutation but not as to 4x4 or 2wd...

my brain is melting with all this transmission stuff… I think you are right. I was thinking the 2wd trans had a slightly different pan.

Yes, the pan is different. 4x4 pan being deeper as I said above, filter is also different to match. That's why those gaskets are marked as 2wd, they were kits with the 2wd filter included. The transmission housing (excluding tailshaft housing) and pan mating surface should be the same.

I can tell you I accidentally came home w/ a 4WD kit one time (for my 2WD). Dropped the pan and then discovered pan wouldn't go back on w/ new filter in place. WTF? Compare old to new filter. The filter inlet on 4WD has an extension to reach down into the deeper 4WD pan. I removed the new filter, measured, hacksawed it off, cleaned it up with a dremel and reinstalled it. Good to go.
