I need to get working on the B2 again, kid's been away so I have have been working on my projects for once. The crappy rebuilt starters have been giving me engagement problems, so I'd like to find an original Ford one to try. There are plenty of Explorers in the local pull it yourself junkyard, and since they only charge 15 bucks for a starter, I figured I would start there. I searched the net a while back, came across a vauge thread that said an Explorer starter would work on a B2/Ranger. I know the B2's and the Auto 4.0 explorers had 138 tooth flywheels. Can anyone confirm that an Explorer starter will bolt into an otherwise stock engine and transmission 84 B2? I know I'll have to do a wiring mod, but that is not a problem if I can solve the mechanical issues.

Have you examined the teeth on the flywheel ring gear?

I scored a free 93 because it "ate starters". I pulled the tranny and replaced the flywheel, and it started right up.

Not sure if I would try it without doing your homework on it. I bought a 87 supercab xlt back in march and the guy I bought it from had an explorer starter in it and it completly trashed the flywheel and broke the starter housing. I dont know what year the explorer the starter was but it sure as hell didn't match right.

If you stick with the 2.9 flywheel, the Explorer starter will NOT work. You will have to swap to a 4.0 clutch, flywheel, pressure plate, and starter for it to work. Then you will have to rewire the starter as the 4.0 starters have the solenoid on the starter and not on the fender well.
