There is a baffle inside the pan that keeps the oil from sloshing and shifting around so that it keeps oil around the pump.

Forgot to say that I have read that this may not be able to be done with the engine in the truck due to this reason that you have run into.

i got it out. its possible, just not fun. i wish i had a one piece gasket to go back on the pan, im scared it will leak. i hate the cork four piece things

I ould use permatex #2 in the cracks between the side gaskets and the front and rear gaskets. Never had any luck with silicone and oil never a prob with permatex.

i used black silicone. ill be surprised if it doesn't have a leak honestly. its nearly impossible to get the pump situated and then add the gasket. but oh well i guess, i tried. i actually started the engine today and it ran great. i plan to finish assembling it all this weekend.

i'm not a mechanic at all, so i just had all that done at a local shop where i know the guys and they did a great job. i specified a high volume pump as well and also to use only Felpro gaskets. they pulled the motor and tranny and replaced rear main that was leaking, and every other gasket and seal they could get to. they also removed all the left over wiring from the duraspark conversion (that was done by the po) and the remaining smog stuff that was still on it. nice and clean in there now. no smoke, no drips, and no complaints!
