I've done a DS conversion on my 85 2.8 and now I cant get the thing to idle to set the time it just dies and if you give it gas it will back fire and then try to die again. any help?

Check your timing and also check to see if its advancing. Also check for vaccum leaks.

A good way to check for timing is to make sure number 1 cylinder is on TDC and on the compression stroke and make sure the rotor under the cap of the distributor is on number 1. That should get you started.
