Compression Test Results

Thanks for that info. The parts store did NOT have the leak down tester they said they did. Guess I'll either order one or get the harbor freight one this afternoon. In the meantime guess I'll be looking to see whats around for parts trucks and engines.

a broken spring and binding valve ect or just bad valve seat...bent valve...

might just need to replace parts from the top and be fine. but you cant see that with the covers on.

though the leak down is a worthy test and easy compared to pulling the covers.

Well I got the harbor freight leak down tester. Found TDC compression on #1 and increased pressure slowly. Sounded like it was leaking out of everywhere and before I got to 90 it was overflowing the radiator. I put the cap back on and went to 50psi. The engine showed 32psi. I could feel it coming out the dipstick and hear it faintly in the tailpipe but not sure if it was the sound of other leaks resonating. I thought that cylinder had a good compression test so I may be screwing this up. I moved to #5, TDC compression and went to 50 again and engine side only had 15. Again, coolant reservoir went higher and I felt it out the dipstick and through the throttle body.

Need to wait for tomorrow for a second pair of hands and eyes for finding tdc to do any more cylinders but is this enough info to say it needs heads and rings..... a new engine?!?

Edit: It definitely idled like trash but how the hell did it run so good driving home with these issues?

Is there any value in continuing with the testing? There are a couple 2003 Taurus 3.0 Vulcan engines at the nearest junkyard so I'm leaning towards getting one of those and hoping for the best. Researching what's involved with that now. Finding most people say you need to change head gaskets but I just watched a video saying thats a myth and it runs and cools fine with the Taurus heads left alone. Any thoughts on that?

The rad fluid being pushed out is a red flag. That means cracked head or blown head gasket. I would say its probably best to get a different engine. Hopefully the yard does a compression test first.

a hot run test is ideal. most places have them recorded and a limited warranty ...these will be in the 800 range. i would still pull the covers in front of them and note actual condition of engine whether its coked up or clean if it has not been hot run within 30 days.
