Well it finally happened and I barely made it back to my driveway. Squeaking had turned into groaning noises, then louder squealing and thumping enough so that it would slow the truck down in neutral. I had to leave for work for two weeks but my girlfriend out on a walk found what I believe from her description are needle bearings. I have no idea how they would have fallen out, though I only took a short look underneath before I left but didn't notice anything.
I had been waiting to find someone (I live on an island) to replace it but had no luck, so I was planning to do it myself. Front wheel bearing, 4x4 1998 with vacuum hubs
