I had suspected that, but wanted to be sure.

From what I can find, you can get a OBD 1 scanner tool fairly cheap on amazon.

You can, but there's no significant advantage to that over a test light/meter or using the CEL if your truck is equipped with one (your '85 isn't, but by '87 or so they became standard).

I know the the test with a meter might be easy, but I have a OBD2 scanner lying around somewhere...

If you're going to buy one, check out the Innova 3145 for about $20. Codes are translated to numbers so there's no need for counting pulses.
