Hi Y'all,

First time posting here so apologies if I'm not in totally the right spot, but I have a '99 XLT 4x4 auto. Also this is long so tldr at the bottom. I bought it used, third owner, 210k on it now. A little while after buying it it started to clunk pretty badly when I would put it into gear, especially reverse, although some days were a lot more clunky than others. It also would struggle to get moving on a hill, and if I was towing something then forget about it, I would need to back up and get a running start, all of which I chalked up to the torque converter or transmission probably going. I brought it to my local mechanic to fact check myself and he said it was probably just my tcc solenoid, so I replaced that and didn't really notice a whole lot of difference, although I did probably give it the first tranny fluid change it's ever gotten...

Anyways, a while ago I was driving it to work and it really started to struggle to keep going, almost like it wasn't getting fuel, so I drove it home and parked it.. then went on vacation for a month. Came back thinking I was going to have to either replace a fuel pump or scrap it because something was seizing up, but it started up fine and ran like nothing ever happened.. same gas in it as when I left.

Flash forward to the other day, I took it out and drove a few blocks before my first stop. When I got back in a minute or two later it started up fine, but as soon as I would put it into gear it would clunk real loud and stall, drive and reverse alike. I let it warm up a little bit, did it again, then one more time for good measure and it clunked into gear and stayed running, so I finished my errands, went home and parked it again. Went to try to figure out what was going on the next day and it acts like nothing happened. As a matter of fact since then its been shifting smoother than ever....

My question is this: what the hell is going on? For months I've been swinging between the truck is junked and its fine. I feel like the torque converter is seizing up but I look at other similar forum posts and people have theories running from that to a fuel pump to spark plugs to tcc solenoids. I have all the maintenance history on it, and all the plugs, wires, and coil packs got replaced within the past 20k miles, and I JUST did the tcc solenoid. So maybe it's that but I'm not so sure. what do we think?

tl;dr Truck been acting funky for a while but always fixes itself after a while. Most recently would start fine and clunk into gear and stall. Now its fine again. Have replaced tcc solenoid; plugs, wires, and coils replaced not long ago. I think the torque converter is cooked but looking for more insight.

For detail sake: Super or Regular Cab, and 3.0 or 4.0 engine?

How are the u-joints on the driveshaft(s); does it have vacuum front hubs (or is there a nut on the front axle) - '99 being a transition year between the vacuum hubs and the permanent ones.

Most of time, a clunk is bad joints; but it can be other issues. Clutch packs on my son's Ranger were going and as a result, it took a moment to shift into gear and when it did so, there was a substantial clunk (mostly because revs were up to get the increased pressure associated).

I'll check the U-joints, I haven't had a chance yet, but I think I have vacuum hubs. I have a dash switch which I figure means its automatic and thereby vacuum system? Although I have a lock nut on the hub as well. none of it works anyways so it's always in 2wd... How would bad U-joints cause it to stall?
