Only really helpful if you need more towing power or went to bigger tires. If you live in a city and do mostly stop and go low gears (high number) is good. If you run on the highway a lot then high gears are better.
For a stock V6 truck that sees a fairly even mix 3.73 is probably best. For a 4-cly 4.10 or 4.56 would be better.
That's actually a lower ratio, common mistake. Going to one of those ratios will give better acceleration and more torque at the wheels (better for off-roading) and get you back into the proper spedo reading when changing tire size.
