A lot of people don’t realize how far back attempts at repeating firearms really goes. Samuel Colt gets a lot of credit but a lot of that is only due to coming up with a successful design and being able to mass produce them with interchangeable parts which made the costs come down to a much more reasonable level. He was also tireless at trying to promote and market his stuff. His idea wasn’t overly original, but it was wildly successful.

He kept up at improving it too, from the Patterson on up they kept making them better.

Videos like above also illustrate that the founding fathers did indeed know about semiautomatic and automatic firearms. They may have been new and in the developmental stage, but they knew about them. The Second Amendment wasn't about muskets anymore than the First wasn't about the quill pen and the printing press. Our education system has down right failed us on just about every front that matters.
