why would my 84 2.8 v6 ranger 4x4 oil pressure shoot up highand stays their please help

Guage or Light, if Light it maybe grounded somewhere. Causing the Light to come on or the sending switch has just failed.

I don't have a light I have a gage but I did geint the gauge cluster and sending unit from a 2.9 I'm going to see if that works well I wait for my buddy get me the mechanical gages he's got

Use a mechanical gauge, the factory ones aren't accurate, they just let you know if there is oil or not. My old 2.8 ran around 60 psi on cold days and when warned up 20-25 psi.

Its a failed switch. The oil pressure gauge on that is just an idiot light, has 3 positions, none, ok, and high.

If it goes high as soon as the key is turned on without starting the engine, then you know you have a switch issue.
